Background of Rangpur district
In terms of naming, it is popularly believed that this name is derived from the earlier 'Rangpur'. It is known from history
that the British started the cultivation of indigo in the subcontinent. Due to the fertile soil in this region, a lot of
indigo was cultivated here. That blue was known as Ranga by the local people. In the evolution of time, Rangpur came from
that color and today's Rangpur from it.Another common idea is that the previous name of Rangpur district was Rangpur.
The name Rangpur derives from the naming of the Rangamahal of Bhagadatta, son of Prag Jyotisvara Nara. Another name of
Rangpur district is Jangpur. The district was also called Jampur by some because of the prevalence of malaria. However,
Rangpur district was the main bastion of resistance movement from the distant past. So the name Jangpur is considered as
the original name of Rangpur. Janga means war, Pur means city or town. People coming from the villages were often killed
by the British or died of malaria. So common people were afraid to come to the city. It can be said without doubt that
Rangpur district was a battlefield in the distant past. Rangpur was called Lal Rangpur because of the way the peasant
movement flourished in the district in the late thirties.

its structure is different from other districts of the country. The topography of the district has been associated with the shifting
of several north-flowing rivers and seismic uplifts in the past. The initial course change of Teesta river was very important in the
land formation of Rangpur district. The Tistandi was a tributary of the Ganges before 1787. Teesta Sikkim or Rangu as it is known in the Himalayas till 1787 joins the
Atrai near Dinajpur district and falls into the lower Ganges river. In the 18th century, the Brahmaputra was seasonally connected to both the rivers by way of the Teesta, the Atrai,
and the Ganges and some scattered canals. Another river Dharla Teesta joins the Brahmaputra river in the lower Himalayan region east of Greater
Rangpur district (present day Kurigram). Ghaghat is another important river in the district. Ghaghat originates from Teesta and flows
south through Rangpur district crossing Gaibandha district and falls into Karatoa river. Atrai river at that time served as the link
between Karatoa and Ganges.
