Overview:

Rangpur Town Hall is the heart of all cultural activities in Rangpur, the tenth city corporation of the country. It is not just an auditorium or hall, it is the birthplace of many cultural, political and social constructive activities. From this town hall, the lifeblood of the culture and the practice of free intellect in the Rangpur region, many young and old personalities have shown the way to the free thought of Bengali culture. Rangpur Town Hall has witnessed many social and political reforms.
The name of King Mahima Ranjan Roy of Kakina is associated with many installations in Rangpur. Although he did not have much formal education, he was an educator. He donated land for many educational institutions and libraries to enlighten the backward Bengalis in the light of good education from their deep love for education. Yet Rangpur Town Hall, Kailasharanjan School, Rangpur Public Library reminds us of the glorious ballad of Tari Mahima. In 185, the then Rangpur Natya Samaj (Rangpur Dramatic Association or RDA) took the initiative to build a Rang Mancha for the development of drama and cultural activities in the region. King Mahima Ranjan Roy of Kakina also came forward in this case. In 1891, he wrote 10 bighas and 3 kathas of land along with the British government to the Rangpur-inspired Natya Samaj to establish a theater. According to the document executed between the Secretary of State Indian Council and the Rangpur Natya Samaj in 1896, the Rangpur Natya Samaj became the owner.
After gaining ownership of the land, drama was first practiced in a shed here. Initially it was called "Rangpur Natya Samaj Griha". Madhusudan Dutt's "Sharmistha" is the first play to be staged on this stage. The Town Hall campus houses the Rangpur Public Library, one of the oldest libraries in undivided India. Which was established in 1854. The Rangpur Sahitya Parishad was established in a part of the library building centered on the Rangpur Public Library, the first branch of the Bangiya Sahitya Parishad outside Calcutta. Next to it is the Rangpur Central Shaheed Minar, a unique example of modern architectural style designed by architect Taj Uddin Chowdhury. Dipali Samajdar, the mother of Shanku Samajdar, the first martyr of the war of liberation in Rangpur region, laid the foundation stone of this Shaheed Minar in the late 70's.
Rangpur Town Hall is not just a maternity ward for fun, entertainment or political activities. There is a lot of pain and suffering mixed with it. The memory of '71 is wrapped in the holes of the bricks and stones of the hall. The heroic cries of the heroines, the muffled cries. During the war of liberation, the Pak aggressors made this town hall a center for 'women's torture'. Many freedom fighters have been killed here in the horrors of war. And the Rangpur Town Hall still stands with memories of that horrible day.
